Image is everything and the AMG image is everything to Mercedes Benz. That iconic image of a sports sedan hurdling through the autobahn at breakneck speeds on a wave of atmospheric noise is what AMG is all about. Unfortunately that glorious noise used to come with a price tag that will also break your neck…now times have changed. You can get an AMG branded product for any model line now and for most any budget. The E53 is one of their newest offerings.

What makes the E53 different from the rest?  The motor. The E53 is powered by a 48 volt turbo charged V6 making 429 horsepower and 384 ft/lbs of torque.  What is a 48 volt motor you ask? Think of it as a mild hybrid unit bolted to an already impressive turbo motor.  The 48 volt unit alone produces 184 ft/lbs amount of torque to aide off the line acceleration and fuel economy. The combination is impressive but in Sport/Sport + mode it comes alive in a truly rabid fashion with a crackle and overrun from the exhaust that will make you giddy. The 4Matic AWD helps plant all that power down to the ground effectively and helps shuffle the E class from bend to bend without any drama.

It’s also a Benz at the end of the day.  So dial it back to Comfort mode and breathe in that interior.  You are surrounded by one of the best looking cabins ever to adorn an automobile. Material quality is first rate, the cabin is whisper quiet at any speed and the carbon fiber trim adds a splash of sporting flair. What truly transforms the experience is at night. The accent and ambient lighting is nothing short of magnificent.

So how do I sum up the 2019 Mercedes E53?  It’s a technological tour de force wrapped in a body that will make you knees weak and an interior that will make your heart melt.
