The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe is a luxury performance SUV coupe type thing that offers a blend of ‘style’, comfort, and performance. It's powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine that produces 429 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, and it's paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The GLE 53 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, and it has a top speed of 174 mph.

The inline 6 comes with a snarl and bark when putting your foot into it. Under acceleration, this is one of the best sounding drivetrains on the market! Unfortunately, anything less than 100% throttle, that drivetrain sounds like a weed whacker and even more so during cold starts. SSiigghh

The GLE 53 Coupe rides on a standard air suspension system that can be adjusted to different settings, depending on your preference. In Comfort mode, the GLE 53 rides smoothly and comfortably, but it can be stiffened up in Sport or Sport Plus modes for a more engaging driving experience.

Unfortunately that experience is hampered by dull and numb steering. Add that to the ‘top heavy’ feeling when trying to corner, the GLE53 is best at more of slightly elevated leisurely pace than anything aggressive.

Inside, the GLE 53 Coupe is luxurious and well-appointed. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and the rear seats offer plenty of legroom and headroom. The cabin is also festooned with fancy features like a Burmester sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Surprisingly/Annoyingly GLE 53 does not come standard with adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. With our as tested price scratching the six figure mark, it’s borderline unacceptable.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe:

Pros:

  • Snarly engine note when giving it the proverbial ‘beans’

  • Snappy and smooth transmission

  • 23rd century interior look

  • Surprisingly spacious and generous cargo

Cons:

  • Hilariously expensive

  • That snarly engine sounds like a weed whacker on startup and part throttle

  • Average MPG of 15

  • Dull Steering

  • Steering wheel controls are horrendous

  • Adaptive Cruise and Lane Keep assist are options….on an ‘as tested price of around $95,000’!!!

Overall, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe is a bit confusing option. Doesn’t have the utility of the ‘normal’ GLE, looks are polarizing, it’s expensive along with being inefficient.

So I propose the following:

If you want a large, family friendly, multipurpose, Mercedes vehicle that ALSO has style, performance, quality and that doesn’t scratch the six figure mark…look at the E Class All Terrain:
