The Great

Drivetrain: Our test unit’s 2.0 liter turbo 4 delivers a punchy 277 ft/lbs of torque and blessedly bolted to a 8 speed traditional automatic transmission. This gives the Maverick a puppy dog like demeanor on the road. Just excited to show its owner what it could do with a mere squeeze of the throttle.

Trucky: It maybe based on the Escape but unlike the Hyundai and Honda competitors, this actually feels like a truck. From its seating position, squared off jaw to the way it rides with authority…if you want your small truck to actually feel like a truck..Maverick is your answer.

The Good

Seats: Cloth seats need to make a comeback. Leather is such a stupid material to makes seats out of, it’s either too hot, too cold or too rigid. Sure it’s easy to clean up but that is about it. Our Maverick had a set of fantastic cloth seats that were comfortable, supportive, breathable and looked great! Cloth is the way people. Cloth.

Buttons!: Actual real live buttons to control things. It’s a marvelous thing I tell you.

Handling: While the Maverick may feel like a truck to drive, it doesn’t handle like one. Leaning on the Escape’s archeticture gives the Maverick a lithe, direct and flingy feeling around the corners.

The Bad

Shifter: The only thing I don’t like about the Maverick is the rotary shifter. It’s never felt right in any Ford product with its numb engagement without any solid tactile feedback. You usually will overshoot whatever gear you are trying to select by +1 or -1.

The Ugly

It’s got a novel if not odd starting procedure. Instead pushing a button, you have to insert a metallic tab on the side of the steering column. From there, you have to twist it clockwise all the way to start it.

The Overall

It’s the best small pickup truck on the market today.
